Answer engine

A system that replies to a question with a composed answer and a short list of citations rather than a page of links — Google’s AI Overviews and AI Mode, ChatGPT search, Perplexity and their equivalents. The unit it retrieves is a statement it can attribute, not a document it can rank.

The consequence, not the concept

It changes what winning looks like. On a ranked surface the prize is a position; on an assembled one it is being the sentence that gets quoted and the source that gets named. A page can be excellent at the first and entirely absent from the second.
