SEO works to place a page in an ordered list. AEO works to get a brand used, and named, inside an answer a system has assembled. One is measured by position, the other by citation — and because the two are not correlated, a site can hold its rankings while disappearing from the answers built above them.
Both are search work. They optimise for different interfaces, they are measured with different instruments, and one of them fails silently while the other looks fine.

SEO addresses an interface that returns a ranked list of destinations. AEO addresses one that returns a composed answer with sources attached. The second does not order pages at all; it selects statements and attributes them.
What counts as success
For SEO, a position. For AEO, being named as a source for a question. A page can be position one and absent from the answer, because assembly selects for extractable, corroborated statements rather than for rank.
What the work touches
SEO work reaches across crawling, indexing, architecture, intent and authority. AEO work concentrates on whether a specific claim on a page can be lifted intact: a direct opening statement, unambiguous entities, and structured data that agrees with what is visible.
How it is measured
Rank tracking cannot see AEO. Citation visibility — how often, and for which questions, a brand is named as a source — moves independently of position, so a reporting stack built only on rank shows no change at all when it rises or falls.
What happens when it is wrong
SEO failures usually show up as lost positions. AEO failures show up as flat positions and falling clicks, because the answer above the list resolved the question without anyone needing the list.

No. The technical, architectural and entity work SEO depends on is what makes a page usable by an answer engine in the first place. AEO is an additional requirement on top of a site that can already be crawled, indexed and understood.
Does ranking first mean being cited?
No, and the two come apart often enough to plan for. Appearing in an assembled answer is a citation problem rather than a ranking problem: pages that rank can be absent, and pages that are cited can rank below the fold.
Which should a site do first?
The layer underneath. A defect in the technical foundation means none of the layers above it is read, so answer-first content added to a site that cannot be crawled or whose entity is ambiguous returns nothing.
