x-default
The hreflang value that names the page to serve when no declared language or region matches the visitor. Without it, the market with the most signals tends to be served to everyone.

Why it matters
The consequence, not the conceptIt is the default nobody chooses deliberately. Omit it and the strongest market becomes the fallback by accident, which is how visitors from unlisted countries end up on a page priced and written for somewhere else.
