Product variants
The forms a single product takes — size, colour, material. Published as separate URLs they compete with each other and split their own signals; the architectural question is what a shopper considers one thing.
Also written Variant SEO or Product variant URLs. Atlas writes British English; the definition is the same.

Why it matters
The consequence, not the conceptThe decision is merchandising before it is technical. If a shopper searches for the colour, the colour deserves a URL; if not, it splits the demand of the product that does. Getting it wrong produces a catalogue competing with itself.
