Information architecture

How a site’s content is divided, named and connected. It is the only layer where a mistake compounds: every later decision about content, linking and templates inherits it.

Also written Site architecture or Search architecture. Atlas writes British English; the definition is the same.

01

Why it matters

The consequence, not the concept

Every other layer stays local when it breaks. This one does not: a wrong division at the top is re-implemented by every template and internal link built afterwards, which is why it is cheap to fix early and expensive to fix at all.

Build visibility

Seven questions

A definition is only worth publishing if it is true of your site too. Atlas reads the site before the first conversation.
